Analytic Solver is Frontline Systems’ new analytics platform for Excel. It is both evolutionary – a 100% compatible upgrade for users of all of Frontline’s previous Solver products (including Solver in Excel) – and revolutionary – a “cloud-first” platform rewritten from the ground up using JavaScript, new Microsoft APIs, and Frontline’s RASON cloud service.

Analytic Solver now comes in two versions: Analytic Solver Desktop, which runs on Excel for Windows (only) and solves models entirely on your PC, and Analytic Solver Cloud, which runs on Excel for Windows, Excel for Macintosh, and Excel for the Web, and solves models “in the cloud” – using Frontline’s RASON server on Microsoft Azure (or if desired on your company’s own RASON server).

  1. Apr 12, 2011  This update enables the authoring of Alt Text for objects, such as shapes, pictures, tables, charts, SmartArt, and movies in Office 2011 applications. Improvements for Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011. The Solver add-in is included. This update includes functionality that lets you install the Solver analysis tools in Excel 2011.
  2. The new Solver for Excel 2011 has been enhanced over its predecessor (for Excel 2008 for MAC). Although mainly targeted at the ultra-geek excel buffs, Frontline Systems also recommends the.

Analytic Solver Desktop must be installed on your Windows PC by running our SolverSetup program. Analytic Solver Cloud needs no Setup program – you simply “insert” it once into your copy of Excel, a process that takes just a few seconds. You could walk up to a business center PC or borrow a friend’s Macintosh, login to Office 365 and Analytic Solver, immediately start working on your models (using desktop Excel or Excel Online), and finish with no files or programs left on that computer. Analytic Solver Cloud does require a constant Internet connection and an Office 365 subscription.

One license, for one price, gives you full access to both versions. The Ribbon and Task Pane user interface is nearly identical in both versions, and your models work the same way in both versions. Analytic Solver Cloud includes each of our “licensed subset” products: Analytic Solver Basic, Analytic Solver Upgrade, Analytic Solver Optimization, Analytic Solver Simulation, Analytic Solver Data Mining, and Analytic Solver Comprehensive. Your license gives you the same feature set and capacities in both Analytic Solver Desktop and Analytic Solver Cloud.

Microsoft Excel Free. The powerful Excel spreadsheet app lets you create, view, edit, and share your files with others quickly and easily. I am trying to run a VBA macro that makes multiple calls to Solver in Mac 2011 code. The macro works without problem on Windows machines. On the Mac the problem is that the macro runs on prior to receiving the Solver output. Thus, the cells are not updated with Solver output. This problem is specific to the Mac. Excel workbooks containing Solver models, and VBA macros that control Solver, can be freely moved between Mac and Windows versions of Excel. All versions of Solver, from Excel 3.0 in 1990 to Excel 2010 and 2011, were developed by Frontline Systems Inc. And licensed to Microsoft. Jan 23, 2014 I have Microsoft Office: Mac 2011 installed on my laptop. I am trying to access the Data Analysis tool for Excel for my Business Statistics class. The option is not available when I go into Tools on Excel.

Our pricing for Analytic Solver Desktop + Cloud is the same as before – you get Analytic Solver Cloud at no extra cost! But solving large/complex models in Analytic Solver Cloud has CPU time limits, so you may well want to use Analytic Solver Desktop for long-running models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Office 365 subscription to use Analytic Solver Cloud?

Yes – Analytic Solver Cloud relies on recently-added capabilities and JavaScript APIs that are present in the latest subscription versions of Excel – but not in older, non-subscription versions. Even Office 2019, which was finalized in mid to late 2018, does not have the necessary capabilities and JavaScript APIs.

I have a license for Analytic Solver from last year. Can I use Analytic Solver Cloud?

Yes – your license entitles you to use Analytic Solver current version, both Analytic Solver Desktop and Analytic Solver Cloud, at no extra charge. If you have less than Analytic Solver Comprehensive power in your current license, talk to us about an optional upgrade for optimization, simulation, or data mining!

Will Analytic Solver Cloud work in Excel for Macintosh, running under MacOS?

Yes – as long as you have the latest Excel version on an Office 365 subscription. Macs are “first-class citizens” for Analytic Solver Cloud. You can also use Analytic Solver Cloud in Excel Online through Safari.

Can Analytic Solver Cloud be used on a Linux computer?

Yes – using Excel Online through a web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. And Excel workbook models you create this way are fully usable in Analytic Solver Desktop and Cloud on Windows and Mac PCs.

Will my model created in Excel’s Solver work in Analytic Solver Cloud?

Yes – Analytic Solver Cloud will automatically recognize your Solver model when you click the Analytic Solver Ribbon tab and the Model button – just click the Optimize button! Note that since VBA is not available in the cloud, VBA macros like SolverOK and SolverSolve won’t work in Analytic Solver Cloud.

Can I create a model in Analytic Solver Cloud, then use in it Analytic Solver Desktop?

Yes – you can do this, and vice versa (create a model in Analytic Solver Desktop and use it in Analytic Solver Cloud). Both versions are equally capable, and models are fully inter-operable between them.

Can I use Analytic Solver Desktop and Analytic Solver Cloud on a Windows PC?

Yes – in this case, Analytic Solver Cloud will “defer to” Analytic Solver Desktop. You’ll see the Analytic Solver and Data Mining Ribbon tabs from Analytic Solver Desktop, and models will be solved on your PC.

My company restricts us from “using the cloud”. Is there a way I can use Analytic Solver Cloud?

Stay in touch with us – if/when Microsoft enhances Office add-ins for 'offline use', your company can license our RASON Standalone Server, and run it on an on-premise Windows Server.

What are your future plans for Analytic Solver Desktop and Analytic Solver Cloud?

We plan to keep enhancing both versions for the foreseeable future. But like Microsoft, we’ve adopted a “cloud-first” strategy: Analytic Solver Cloud is likely to get more rapid enhancements than Analytic Solver Desktop. There may be “cloud-only features” that don’t apply to Analytic Solver Desktop.

News Release

INCLINE VILLAGE, NV – November 16, 2010 – Frontline Systems Inc., developer of the Solver in Microsoft Excel, is shipping new Mac OSX and Excel 2011 compatible versions of Premium Solver Platform and five plug-in, large-scale Solver Engines, designed to bring unmatched ease, speed, and power to solving challenging mathematical optimization problems with up to millions of decision variables. The new products are released as Version 10.5, in line with their counterparts on Windows. Free trial versions are available for download.

“We’ve brought the benefit of 20 years of optimization software development to the Macintosh,” said Daniel Fylstra, Frontline Systems’ president. “Mac users can now take advantage of the latest and most powerful Solvers available on any platform.”

Premium Solver Platform Upward Compatible from Excel 2011 Solver

Premium Solver Platform V10.0 for Mac is upward compatible from the new Solver for Excel 2011, and all previous versions of Solver for Mac and Windows – but it’s far more powerful. Its LP/Quadratic Solver handles linear programming problems up to 40 times larger than the standard Solver, and problems of virtually unlimited size – millions of decision variables – with plug-in large-scale Solver Engines. While speed is highly problem-dependent, it usually solves linear mixed-integer problems 10 to 100 times faster than the standard Solver, and quadratic programming problems up to 10 times larger at high speed.

PSI Technology Aids Users and Solver Engines

Premium Solver Platform includes Frontline’s Polymorphic Spreadsheet Interpreter (PSI Technology), refined over the past 10 years, which replaces the core formula interpreter used in Excel with an advanced interpreter that can analyze Excel formulas for properties (such as linearity and convexity) important for optimization, provide diagnostic aids to users, and automatically compute function gradients – critical for optimization – using algorithmic differentiation. The PSI Interpreter has a major impact on nonlinear problems, which can be solved up to 10 to 100 times faster than the standard Excel Solver.

Familiar Solver User Interface Enhanced

Premium Solver Platform features a new Solver Parameters dialog that looks familiar to users of the standard Excel Solver, but offers easier ways to create and modify the elements of Solver models. In place of a simple list of constraints, it displays an outlined list of all the elements of the model – objective, decision variables, and general, bound, integer, semi-continuous, and conic constraints. The last two constraint types go beyond the standard Solver, offering new power to users. Premium Solver Platform also includes a SOCP Barrier Solver that solves conic optimization problems.

New Object-Oriented API for Excel VBA Users

Premium Solver Platform supports the traditional VBA macros used to control the standard Excel Solver, such as SolverOK, and SolverSolve. But it also offers a new object-oriented API that provides direct high-level access to optimization models, and is compatible with the API used in Solver Platform SDK, Frontline’s leading tool for optimization and simulation in a programming language. This API, offered for the past four years in Frontline’s products for Windows, has proven very popular with users.

Plug-in Solver Engines Extend the Power of Premium Solver Platform

Frontline has ported five plug-in, large-scale Solver Engines to the Mac, that “plug in” seamlessly into Premium Solver Platform and extend its power. They include:

Large-Scale LP/QP Solver Engine, capable of solving linear and mixed-integer problems of virtually unlimited size, and quadratic programming problems of medium to large size.

MOSEK Solver Engine, capable of solving linear, mixed-integer, quadratic, conic, and convex nonlinear problems of virtually unlimited size. MOSEK is often considered the world’s best SOCP Solver.

Gurobi Solver Engine, considered the world’s fastest Solver for linear mixed-integer problems, which also supports large-scale quadratic programming problems in its latest release.

Large-Scale GRG Solver Engine, capable of solving smooth nonlinear problems of up to 12,000 variables, using sparse matrix techniques.

KNITRO Solver Engine, capable of solving smooth nonlinear optimization of virtually unlimited size. It is considered the world’s best implementation of modern interior point (or barrier) methods for non-linear, non-convex optimization, and it also offers SLQP (Sequential Linear-Quadratic) methods.
