Jan 29, 2020 Problem Images copied from Snagit do not appear when pasted into a Word document. Solution Open Word. Click File Options Advanced. Scroll down to the Show document content section.

Hi, thanks in advance for any help. This has been driving me CRAZY!

For some reason, my Word document icons have gone to this ugly default icon. It opens the documents in the Word program just fine. And I can point it to the correct icon on my Desktop.

Before this happened: I had just updated to Office 2007, and updated my icon on my RKLauncher.

What I've already tried: Restoring/Deleting/etc from Folder Options > File Types does absolutely nothing. I've also tried rebuilding on TweakUI.

Here's an image:

Do you know how to check registry values? If so what is the value of the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTWord.Document.8DefaultIcon ? I ask as that key should contain the path to the Word icon.

No, I do not. I Googled how to do it, but I didn't quite understand any of the instructions. : Sorry.

Ok. Not a problem. I just wanted to double check something but it should be still be fine without checking that.
Try this now:
1. Download and run the file at http://www.techoddity.com/downloads/fixes/word2007-typedoc-iconrestore.reg
2. Click Continue on the User Account Control prompt.
3. Click Yes.
4. Click Ok.
5. The icon should be restored now. If it isn't try rebooting.

It opens as a .txt but I imported it into the Registry Editor (someone suggested this) and I rebooted. The icons didn't change, unfortunately. :(

:) Thanks, btw, for the help.

@jd, since he's got Word 2007, wouldn't it be Word.Document.12 instead? [edit: probably not, now that I think about it. Disregard. Microsoft office view only mac. ]

@freefallen: What you could theoretically do is go into the 'Set Associations' section of control panel, change .doc files to open with something else (notepad), and then change them back to Word 2007. This should update the icon.

The exact same problem just happened to me on my work laptop.. I'll boot it up and test it out.

Ok. Try this:
1. Open Folder Options -> File Types.
2. Select 'Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 Format'.
3. Click the Advanced option.
4. Click 'Change Icon..'.
5. Click 'Browse..'.
6. Browse to 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12'.
7. Double click 'WINWORD.EXE'.
8. Double click the document icon to use.
9. Click ok.
10. Click ok.
11. Click close.

Microsoft Word Logo Not Showing Machine

@jd:

Thanks for the correct instructions, just noticed that he's not using vista.

Thanks guys. But still issues. Two clarifications: (1) I'm using XP. (2) I'm a she. ;)

So, when I went into File Types, my .DOC extension was already pointed to WINWORD.EXE. The icons show up fine for .DOC and all other Word documents. See image:

However, the Advanced option wasn't available until I clicked Restore. In File Types the icon for .DOC went back to the weird default one even though in its Change Icon section it points to a regular Word icon. See image:

Ok. Try downloading and importing the registry file at http://www.techoddity.com/downloads/fixes/word2007-typedoc-allrestore.reg
I exported the needed registry keys for the file type so this should fix the problem.

@freefallen: I guess I was wrong twice then! I'll leave this one to jd, he's on a roll. =)

Haha @ The Geek. ;) Thanks anyways. And jd, is on a roll!

Except, jd, even after I imported the registry file, everything still looks the same as the image immediately above (with .DOC pointed towards the right icon, but showing up as default on the File Types list and for my other documents).

: Apologies for this mess, I really appreciate all your help.

Did you try rebooting after importing that registry file?

Yep. Even imported and rebooted again, in case I was stupid the first time.

That registry file should have at least added back the open, edit, print, etc options to the file type. I'm not sure why it didn't.

What do you mean the open, edit, etc options?

And nooo, don't give up jd! :(

In that Screen Shot under Actions it should list Open, Edit, print to and others.

Ah.

So, I did a System Restore before this started happening, and now the icons are back (as are the Actions stuff). However, my Word program doesn't open now. SIGH! Excel is fine, all other Office programs are fine, but Word is just..oy.
